Color grey is a visual perception resulting from the way light interacts with objects and is detected by the human eye. It’s not an inherent property of things themselves — rather, it’s a product of light wavelengths, object surface properties, and our brain’s interpretation.
Key Basics
- Light and Wavelengths: Visible light is a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum, with wavelengths ranging from about 400nm (violet) to 700nm (red). Objects appear colored because they absorb some wavelengths and reflect others — the reflected light is what we see as color.
- Primary Colors: There are two main systems:
- Additive primaries (light-based, e.g., screens): Red, green, blue (RGB). Combining all three makes white light.
- Subtractive primaries (pigment-based, e.g., paint): Cyan, magenta, yellow (CMY) — plus black (K) for practical printing (CMYK). Combining all makes black.
- Color Properties: Every color can be defined by three attributes:
- Hue: The "color" itself (e.g., red, blue, green).
- Saturation: How intense or vivid the color is (from dull/gray to bright/pure).
- Value (or Luminance): How light or dark the color is (from black to white).
